What you can expect from us, what we ask of you, and exactly how donations,
refunds and recurring gifts work. No clause here exists to catch anybody out.
Terms and conditions
Last updated: 10 August 2026Applies to: helpthepoorinitiative.orgGoverning law: Nigeria
The short version
Donations are voluntary gifts, not purchases — but if you give by mistake,
tell us within 14 days and we will refund it.
A monthly gift can be cancelled at any time, by one email
or one phone call, with no notice period.
If you give to a specific programme, it goes there. If that programme is
ever fully funded, we ask you before moving it.
You may reuse our words and figures if you credit us. Photographs of the
people we serve are not yours to reuse.
Nothing here limits your rights under Nigerian consumer or charity law.
01 These terms
These terms apply between you and Help The Poor Initiative
whenever you use this website, make a donation, subscribe to updates, or
apply to volunteer. By doing any of those things you accept them.
They sit alongside our Privacy Policy, which
explains what we do with your personal information. Where the two documents
overlap, the Privacy Policy governs anything about data.
Help The Poor Initiative — Incorporated Trustees,
RC 1234567, registered on 19 March 2025 at No 11 Ebichigbo St, Okwe,
Oshimili South LGA, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria.
In these terms "we", "us" and "our" mean that organisation.
02 Using this website
You are welcome to read, share and link to anything here. Please do not:
attempt to gain access to systems or data you are not entitled to;
submit anything unlawful, abusive, or knowingly false through our forms;
use automated tools to scrape, overload or disrupt the site;
impersonate us, or imply we endorse something we do not.
We aim to keep the site available and correct, but we may change, suspend or
withdraw any part of it without notice — including while we fix something.
03 Donations
A donation is a voluntary gift. You receive no goods or
services in return, and it is not a purchase or an investment.
Receipts
We email a receipt as soon as a payment succeeds. If one does not arrive
within an hour, check your spam folder and then
tell us — we will resend it.
Recurring gifts
If you choose monthly or annual giving, your chosen amount is collected on
the same date each period until you stop it. We will tell you before any
change to the amount or the schedule.
Currency and amounts
Naira and dollar amounts on the donate page are separate published tiers,
not conversions of one another. You are charged in the currency shown at the
point you give. Your bank may apply its own conversion or international fee,
which is outside our control.
Covering transaction fees
You may optionally add roughly 3% so the full amount you intended reaches
our programmes. This is entirely optional and is never pre-selected.
Failed and disputed payments
We are not responsible for payments that fail at your bank or our payment
provider. If you believe a payment was taken in error, please contact us
before raising a chargeback — it is faster, and it costs the charity less.
04 Refunds and cancellations
If you gave by mistake, we will refund you. Tell us within
14 days of the payment and we will return it in full, to
the original payment method, without asking you to justify the request.
Common honest mistakes — the wrong amount, a duplicate click, choosing
monthly when you meant one-off — are all covered. Refunds are normally
processed within 10 working days, though your bank may take longer to show
it.
After 14 days
Once funds have been committed to a programme we cannot usually recover them.
Ask anyway if your circumstances have changed: we would rather discuss it
than have you regret giving.
Cancelling a recurring gift
Email info@helpthepoorinitiative.africa
or call 0704 035 9748. There is
no notice period and no cancellation fee. We will stop it
the same working day and confirm in writing. Payments already collected
before you cancelled are treated under the 14-day rule above.
05 Restricted gifts
If you choose a specific programme on the donate page, your gift is
restricted to it. We track restricted funds separately in
our accounts and spend them only on the programme you chose.
Occasionally a programme becomes fully funded, or circumstances make it
impossible to deliver as planned. If that happens we will
contact you and ask before applying your gift elsewhere. We
will not quietly reallocate it.
Gifts marked "Where most needed" are unrestricted, which lets us direct them
to whichever programme is under the most pressure that month. You can see
where the money went in our annual reports.
06 Volunteering
Submitting an application does not create an employment relationship, a
contract, or any entitlement to a placement. We assess every application and
may decline one without giving detailed reasons.
Volunteers must be 18 or over unless a role explicitly
says otherwise and a guardian consents.
Some roles require references, a background check, or proof of
professional registration — clinical roles always do.
Volunteering is unpaid. Agreed, documented travel costs may be
reimbursed.
Either side may end a placement at any time.
07 Conduct and safeguarding
Everyone acting on our behalf — staff, volunteer or partner — must treat the
people we serve with dignity, and must never use their position for personal
benefit or to exploit anyone.
If you have a safeguarding concern, do not wait. Call
0704 035 9748 at any hour, or use the
contact form and choose “Raising a concern or
complaint” — it bypasses the general inbox and reaches someone senior.
We may withdraw access, decline a placement, or refuse a donation where we
reasonably believe doing so protects the people we serve or the integrity of
the organisation.
08 Our content and yours
The text, design, logo and code of this site belong to us or to our
licensors. The Help The Poor Initiative name and emblem are
ours and may not be used to imply endorsement or affiliation.
You may quote our words and reproduce our published figures for study,
journalism, or to tell someone about the work, provided you credit us and do
not misrepresent what we said.
Photographs of the people we serve are not licensed for reuse.
They were taken with the consent of the individuals shown, for our use.
Redistributing them removes that consent.
Anything you send us — a message, an application, a photograph — remains
yours. By sending it you give us permission to use it for the purpose you
sent it for. We will ask separately before using your words or image in any
public material.
09 Accuracy and liability
We take care that what we publish is accurate at the time of publishing.
Programme figures, costs and impact numbers are drawn from our records and
are updated periodically; they describe past work and are not a promise of
future results.
This site may link to other organisations. We do not control those sites and
are not responsible for their content or their handling of your data.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential
loss arising from your use of this site. Nothing in these terms
limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for
fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded — and
nothing here affects your statutory rights.
10 Governing law and changes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and
the Nigerian courts have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are giving
from another country, your own local consumer protections still apply to you.
We may update these terms. The date at the top always shows the current
version, and a change never applies retrospectively to a donation already
made. If a change is significant we will say so rather than rely on you
noticing.
If any single clause turns out to be unenforceable, the rest continues to
apply.
